Please watch these videos until you are comfortable you understand them, we will be practicing them during training this week.
Why This Drill Matters
According to the FAW Grassroots Strategy and Coach Cymru resources, development should focus on:
- Game understanding through structured play
- Confidence-building via repetition and success
- Empowering players to make decisions independently
Triangle drills support these by:
- Creating natural passing lanes and angles for support
- Encouraging third-man runs, which are key to unlocking defences
- Building rhythm and confidence in possession and finishing
Positional Scope
Defenders
- Learn to play out from the back using triangle support
- Practice angled passes to midfield under pressure
- Develop composure and scanning habits
Midfielders
- Master bounce passes and third-man runs
- Improve spatial awareness and timing
- Link play between defence and attack
Attackers
- Practice receiving in pockets and finishing from combinations
- Learn to rotate and create space for others
- Build confidence in front of goal through repetition
Reflection
During cool-down, players should think about their learning.
“How did triangle movement help to create space or score today?”
Coaching Tips
- Keep instructions minimal during the drill—let players experiment and self-correct
- Use guided questions like “What did you see before making that pass?” or “How could you support better?”
- Celebrate successful combinations and finishes to build belief
- Rotate roles so all players experience each position in the triangle
